Ginger tea

Ginger is an antihistamine and a natural decongestant with potent antibacterial, expectorant, and antiviral characteristics. It can therefore alleviate congestion in the throat and chest by expelling surplus phlegm. The best option for this is ginger tea. For the preparation, you will need:

2 cups of water

1 tsp of honey

1 tsp of peppercorn

6 slices of ginger

First, boil the water and then add the ginger and peppercorn. Once the mixture starts to boil, cover it and leave it for one minute more. Then, lower the heat to medium and let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes. Afterwards, remove the pot from the heat and add the honey.

Use: Drink 2 cups of the tea daily.

Lemon and honey mixture

Lemon and honey are abundant in antifungal and antibacterial characteristics while the vitamin C from lemons will avert congestion and strengthen the immunity. Moreover, its acidity will speed up the breakdown of the mucus.

You will need:

2 tbsp of lemon juice

1 tbsp of honey

Preparation: Mix the two ingredients well to get a homogeneous mixture.

Use: Consume the mixture 3 times on a daily basis.

Steam inhalation

This method can be of great aid in releasing clogged mucus. To prepare it, you will need 4 cups of boiling water, one larger towel, one tsp of dried rosemary, and ½ tsp of thyme. Add the herbs to the boiling water and lean towards the steam and cover the head with a towel to make sure the steam does not get away and inhale the steam for 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat the procedure few times per day.


The curcumin in turmeric possesses potent antiseptic and antibacterial characteristics that can lower the phlegm deposits by removing the mucus-causing bacteria. It also has the capacity to make the immunity stronger. Mix 1 tsp of turmeric powder with ½ tsp of salt and one glass of warm water and gargle with the mixture 3 to 4 times per day.
